Gallbladder Cancer Treatment

Cancer specialists at Kalra Hospital use latest technology and specialized procedures for the treatment or removal of the cancer affected parts of the body. Gallbladder cancer is a rare disease where the malignant cells are formed in the tissues of the organ. Females are at a higher risk of getting affected by this gallbladder cancer.

Gallbladder cancer may not have any evident signs or symptoms in its early stages and therefore it might be difficult to diagnose it at early stage. However, a few symptoms are common with many other diseases include jaundice, stomach pain, fever, nausea and vomiting, bloating, lump in the abdomen etc.

It is advisable to go for early treatment for gallbladder disease. In certain cases, gallbladder cancer is detected while being diagnosed for other gallbladder infections. The standard options for gallbladder cancer treatment include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

Gallbladder cancer may be treated with surgery to remove the organ and some tissues around it. In certain cases, lymph nodes may be removed. A laparoscope is sometimes used in the gallbladder surgery. If found that cancer has spread and the organ alone cannot be removed, the specialists opt for alternatives. Palliative surgeries are performed to relieve the symptoms. This is usually done by surgical biliary bypass or endoscopic stent placement. Surgical biliary bypass involves cutting the bile duct and sewing to the small intestines to create a new pathway. Endoscopic stent placement is the method of putting a stent (a thin, flexible tube) to drain the excess bile.

Radiation therapy involves the use of high energy x-rays or other types of radiations to kill the cancer cells for inflamed gallbladder treatment. This prevents the cluster of cancer cells from growing at a rapid rate and is usually performed by a machine outside the body.

Chemotherapy uses drugs to reduce the growth of malignant cells by killing them or by reducing the rate of cell division. The drugs enter the bloodstream and flow to the cancer cells throughout the body. The type of chemotherapy used is dependent on the type and stage of cancer of the patient.
