There are many precautions that medical tourists or patients should know while traveling from their native countries to the chosen destination. Some of the general health care tips that one must follow during the visit include the following:
- Avoid alcohol while traveling and drink a lot of water. Generally in the flight the cabin of the airplane is very dry, hence consumption of alcohol may result in dehydration.
- Stretch your body frequently during long trips. Whether you are flying or moving by train, the long time immobility may cause clots. It is advised to flex your ankles at regular intervals and take a walk around to keep your blood circulating.
- Never test your limits. The excursions and sight seeing tour should be invigorating but not hectic. Don't try to do and see everything in too short a time. Allow your body to relax in the luxury and bring peace to your mind, with a good balance between activity and rest.
- Listen to your body and take rest when you feel the need. The trip will be a memorable experience, when you feel good.
- Prepare a proper healthcare program before you leave for the destination. Research the area you intend to visit and find nearest counter for drugs and medical assistance in emergency needs.
- If you are suffering from chronic medical condition and plan to be away for more than a couple of weeks, work with your doctor to get medical referrals in the areas you plan to visit.
- Know the limits of your health insurance plans for coverage outside the local area.
- Always carry a first aid kit with the necessary medical aid.
- Drink only bottled or boiled water, or carbonated (bubbly) drinks in cans or bottles. Avoid tap water, fountain drinks and ice cubes.
